Elena is learning her letters I know that Elena is only three - but we are convinced she is going to read before she is 5. On the other hand - this developmental progress is not without its share of general hilarity. To wit - yesterday at dinner, as we ate potato salad with peas. Elena: "Papi - Peas start with 'P' - so does Percy and Papi" Papi: "Yes Elena, so does Potatoes" Elena: "Papi - what starts with 'Q'?" Papi: "Well, Quito, Quiet, Quixotic... but not too many other words A little later. Elena: "When we run out of pickles we'll have to get some new pickle plants" Papi: "Well, Elena you see, pickles come from cucumbers" Elena: "Papi - do cucumbers start with a 'Q'?" Papi: "Ha ha - well Elena - english is a hard language, so many things seem like they should be one way but the are another. Elena: "But Papi - I speak English - its not that hard..." Papi: "Yes Elena - but cucumbers sound like they start with a 'Q', but they really start with a 'C'. Elena "Well why don't they call them "cee-Cumbers" then.. Oh the joy...
